DAY 5 – FRIDAY 29 JUNE – KENT v SURREY – Results >>
Our last day of County Week 2018 at Hockley Golf Club saw yet another beautiful day of blue skies and sunshine.
We started the day with our usual Foursomes pairings of Darcie and Lily, Nicola and Olivia and Sharna and Nicole. After some wonderful and exciting golf, all 3 matches went down the 18th hole, we only came out with one halved match from Darcie and Lily.
The par 3, 16th hole saw two spectacular chip ins from the bunker front right from Lily and Nicole Stewart.
So, going into the afternoon singles 2 1/2 – 1/2 down seemed like a mountain to climb but we were feeling very positive at lunch.
After the first few holes things were not looking good but as the afternoon wore on the tide seemed to be turning.
Darcie in the first match out fought well but eventually lost 4 and 3. Lily was firing on all cylinders from the start and had a great 4 and 3 victory. This was followed by another big win, this time from Nicole Amos 5 and 3. Nicola Smith in the fifth match out was again on fine form and came in with a 4 and 3 win. So, we had 3 wins under our belt and just needed 1 more point from Nicole Stewart and Sharna to halve the match and finish 2nd in the tournament on count back.
They both battled hard but unfortunately Nicole lost on the 18th and Sharna halved her match. This meant a 5-4 loss overall which put us in 4th place for the tournament.
We were obviously disappointed to have not secured 2nd place but very proud of our overall achievement this week having ended up 2nd on actual individual matches won or halved (18 points).
Hampshire were excellent hosts and the week ran extremely smoothly.
It was a great experience, enjoyed by all and bodes very well for us next year when Middlesex will be the hosts at Hendon Golf Club.
DAY 4 – THURSDAY 28 JUNE – KENT v SUSSEX – Results >>
Today was much more windy than we had experienced so far and it made conditions slightly more trickier for the players.
However, we came out fighting from the beginning and with some superb play in the morning foursomes by our usual pairings of Darcie and Lily (winning 2 and 1) Nicola and Olivia (winning 7 and 6) and Sharna and Nicole (losing 2 and 1) saw us come out on top with a 2-1 lead at lunchtime.
In the afternoon singles Kent were superb winning 4 of the 6 matches to win 6-3 overall. There were some great victories – Lily 5 and 4, Nicole 3 and 2, Nicola 5 and 4 and Sharna 4 and 3.
It was a pleasure to watch such fantastic golf from both sides and we were very proud to have won so convincingly.
Surrey (who have already been declared the winners) await us tomorrow (Friday) on our final day.
DAY 3 – WEDNESDAY 27 JUNE – KENT v MIDDLESEX – Results >>
The third day saw us facing Middlesex who, although having narrowly lost their first two matches, had put up some fine performances.
The morning foursomes were all close matches with some fine golf, all three matches going to the 18th hole.
Our leading pair Sharna and Nicole put up a great performance winning 2 up and although holding up well for most of the match, our second pair out, Nicola and Olivia, eventually lost 2 down. Darcie and Lily our final pair also fought well against Middlesex’s top pairing but finally lost out just 1 down.
In the afternoon singles we saw some great golf again and it was dominated by fighting come backs. Ainee had a tough match against a very strong Middlesex player and although down early on in the match, only finally lost on the 18th hole. In the second match the Middlesex player got off to a flying start against Darcie who found herself 6 down very quickly. However, she rallied magnificently and with some fine golf, ended up taking the match 2 and 1. Nicole Amos, our third player out, came across Middlesex’s top player in excellent form and couldn’t hold off her charge from the very beginning, losing out 8 and 7. In the fourth match out, Nicole Stewart had a very close match all the way but then found herself 2 down going down the 17th hole. However, she played those last 2 holes excellently and came in with a well earned half. Nicola was in the fifth match and was in great form, leading from the start and finishing with a great win, 4 and 3. It was a similar story in the final match with Sharna also playing some wonderful golf, leading all the way and finishing 2 up.
These results meant that we halved our match overall which was a pretty fair conclusion to the day. We were obviously disappointed not to have sealed the necessary extra half a point to take the match but felt we had done well against an ever improving Middlesex side.
DAY 2 – TUESDAY 26 JUNE – REST DAY
Rest day today and we are at the zoo!
DAY 1 – MONDAY 25 JUNE – KENT V HAMPSHIRE – Results >>
A blisteringly hot sunny day welcomed our first County Week match at Hockley Golf Club against current holders and hosts, Hampshire.
The morning foursomes were closely contested with Kent just losing out 2 matches to 1. Nicola Smith and rookie 14 year old Olivia Heard achieved a magnificent win for Kent, 5 and 4.
Sharna Dutrieux and Nicole Stewart were never down until the 17th hole and Hampshire just held on to win 1 up.
In the final match Kent Champion Darcie Smith and runner up Lily Price fought all the way but fell foul of some magnificent play and long range putting from the Hampshire pair culminating with an eagle on the 14th, holing out from 160 yards!!
In the afternoon singles (6 matches) we again fought well and there were some really close matches.
Darcie led the field, playing the very experienced Hampshire player Kerry Smith. The match swung backwards and forwards and eventually finished on the 17th with Hampshire winning 2 and 1. Lily battled well but eventually lost out 3 and 2. Third out was Ainee O’Connor (back from Uni in America) who was in top form winning comfortably 5 & 3 followed by Sharna who had a very close match, holding on to win 2 & 1. Nicola Smith, also back from Uni in America had an excellent match going way ahead early on and then fighting off a comeback to win 3 & 2. At the back of the field Nicole was battling hard and was very much holding her own against a very strong and on form opponent but eventually lost out 5 & 4.
Overall we were happy with our performance and feeling confident that we can do well for the rest of the week and will certainly be doing our best.
